A dream journal is an invaluable source of psychological insight.

This mobile app will help you track and interpret dreams

Sueños is a Spanglish dream tracking app inspired by the Taíno stories I was told back on my home island of Cuba. Luna will not only help you journal your dreams and nightmares, but will also help you interpret them.

If I had something that could help me record my dreams, I would be more willing to analyze and try to interpret them.
My ideal app would give me the freedom to journal my dreams and help me learn about them.

A mascot to guide and comfort the user: Luna

In my research and polls, users showed 90% more engagement in apps that had mascots. Because of this, I created Luna to guide users through the dream realm.

Inspiration

The Taíno were an indigenous people of the Caribbean that would track and share their dreams. These people worshipped a moon spirit known as Atabey.
Luna (the Spanish word for moon) is inspired by the spirit of Atabey and the Taíno people.

After designing Luna, I moved onto
finding the perfect purple.

To evaluate how users felt and the likelihood of them signing up, I did 8 usability tests.

This allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of what different users look for
when signing up for a new app.

Once signed up, the user can begin by recording a dream or a nightmare.

Spanglish

I designed this app in Spanglish. Spanglish is a hybrid language combining Spanish and English.

The dream screen is lighter and the nightmare screen is darker. The nightmare section is also designed to help the user feel a level of comfort and reduce the stress that they may be experiencing when waking from a nightmare.

 Rating your Dreams

A way to comfort the user

I designed the app as both a journaling app and an interpreting app. The user will begin by picking if they had a dream or a nightmare. Luna will then respond accordingly; She will ask you to rate your dream or nightmare (this is the mechanism used to determine her response).

Why does Luna change her response?

I wanted the user to feel a sense of comfort when journaling.

To achieve this, the app needs to adapt to the user. I decided to implement a rating mechanism to aid with this.  If the user gives a high rating, she will be excited. If the user gives a low rating for a dream, Luna will attempt to comfort them.

An overwhelming 91/100 users enjoyed this feature. Most users claimed that it provided comfort, especially when faced with a nightmare.

Keywords

After the user has finished journaling, their dreams can be found in the dream journal. The app will automatically highlight keywords for the user within their journal entries. Users are able to tap on keywords to help them interpret their dreams.

My thoughts

Results, reflections, and insights

Dreams really can come true. In a one week sprint, I was able to design an MVP prototype that allowed the user to journal their dreams and interpret them.

Not every feature was fully resolved. It would have been nice if there was a word search feature as well as a way to filter by dream, nightmare, or rating.

Focus on the customer. Feedback is very valuable, but I made sure to focus on what my user wanted and needed before working on other features that may add to the project, but have little to do with what the user needed.
